Blues That Rocks!
The Hoodoo Blues Band has been in existence since 2005 when band leader Geo decided to produce a high energy Blues Band that inspires dancing, not just listening!
Over the years it has seen a few reincarnations, but many are saying it has never sounded better than present day:
"CADILLAC" CHUCK GRUNDT : Harp and Lead Vocals
JOHN WENZEL: Lead Guitar & Vocals
“Good Rockin’ Johnny” Wenzel originally hails from Santa Maria, CA.
An incredible showman & gifted guitar player, John was a member of Fat Chance Blues Band and is responsible for bringing IKO-IKO’S band leader, Graham Wood Drout, out of the audience and into the music business as the singer for the band. Fat Chance eventually evolved into what is now IKO-IKO.
John is a dynamic performer and a master of tone who shys away from cliche' Blues phrasing and over the years has developed a unique musical vocabulary which brings to mind the Southern Rock sensibilities of Duane Allman and others of that generation.
Johns playing is, at times, nothing less than intoxicating giving IKO-IKO their “Swampadellic” signature sound.
His performance credits include work with his own power combo called Good Rockin’ Johnny & The Wise Guys.
John has recorded and toured Europe with Little Nicky & The Slicks featuring violinist and IKO-IKO side kick Nicole Yarling and he was also the driving force behind south Florida’s Big City Blues Band powered by music legend drummer Freddy Scott who was on the bus at the age of sixteen kicking the drums with none other than "Little Richard" Penniman.
John has shared the stage with a New York phone book size roster of Blues heroes including Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Sam and Dave, John Lee Hooker, Dr. John, Greg Allman, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, James Cotton, Buddy Guy, George Thorogood, Bobby Blue Bland, Koko Taylor and many others.
The Hoodoo Blues Band is proud to have John as our newest member of the band.
JIM KELLEY: Bass Guitar & Vocals. Jim is a South Florida Bass Stalwart and one of the original members of the band. Jim was born on the South Side of Chicago and raised in the State of New York. Although his parents were not musicians they were great lovers of music, so Jim was raised in a household with consistent great music playing in the background. His first musical instrument was the trumpet. After that he played the drums and one fine day he discovered his attraction to the Bass Violin and it has been all bass ever since. Down through the years Jim has been blessed to be surrounded by many fine musicians especially in New York and he got to tour extensively through the United States with many of the big names.
Jim was inducted into the Rochester, NY Music Hall of Fame on April 28th, 2019. At this point in time, Jim has played in over 3,200 gigs, has appeared on 20 albums and has 64 published original compositions most of which have been written on the piano. Jim was considered to be a trend setter many years ago when he pretty much introduced the fret-less electric bass into the musical mix. Jim moved to South Florida in the early eighties and has played with most of the better players in this region. Jim is happily married to a very sweet lady from Brazil and has five incredible children and three grandchildren. Jim is very proud that his youngest son as well as a grandson both play the bass. No DNA testing required. "I am very excited to be playing with the fine unit of musicians that make up The Hoodoo Blues Band. This band has solid players at every position and to say our lead singer Schall Adams is dynamic would be an huge understatement".
"HOODOO" GEO: Drums & Vocals. Geo is our Band Leader. A Boston area transplant who has been living in South Florida since 1975. Prior to that, he was a High School Band Drumline member. Geo remembers his first paying gig at the Commodore Ballroom in Lowell, Mass. It was in 1963 with his band "The Novas" , where he was paid $25.00 for the gig. A lot of money back in the day. Geo was planning to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston after High School, but got sidetracked by a draft notice. He served tours in Germany and Vietnam with the U.S. Army from 1967-1970.
Ever the musician, In Vietnam, he actually had a hand-me-down Rogers drum kit left over from a USO show given to him by a departing fellow soldier. Now, Geo has settled into his place with the Hoodoo Blues Band making "Blues That Rocks".
